Chapter 14

The morning sun was creeping through the cracks between the blinds. Laying in the middle of the bed surrounded by a mountain of pillows, Alexis debated whether she should look to check the time and panic.

Today was the big day, and she had lots to do. Her priority task would be as mediator between Jessica and her mother. The two were so alike, it was inevitable a power struggle would occur. Both were perfectionists when event planning. Alexis was certain they both had mentally run through and had checked, double checked, and tripled checked their lists of things to be done.

She sat up in bed and saw that it was after nine o’clock. Oh, definitely panic time. She quietly made her way to the kitchen coffeepot for a caffeine fix before heading to the shower to clear the cobwebs from her head.

Grandpa was already in the kitchen pouring a cup. When he saw her, he said nothing; just gave his cup to her and got another from the cupboard for himself.

Alexis walked to the refrigerator for milk.

After she took a few sips of the strong coffee, he asked, “Late night?”

“Yeah, it was after midnight when we left the bar.” She sat at the table. “Grandpa, you wouldn’t believe the drama driving home.”

He pulled two homemade biscotti from a canister and handed her one. Sitting across from her, he asked, “What happened?”

“Let’s see. Since it was technically the day of the wedding, Jes decided she couldn’t ride with Ethan, who by the way, wasn’t in any shape to drive. Grant had to convince him they needed to leave the bar.”

Alexis took a bite of biscotto before continuing. “Erica threw a hissy fit when it was first suggested she and Matthew ride back with Jes and me. Sandy and Ken offered to drive anyone else who needed it. Unfortunately, there were a lot of people who decided they couldn’t drive, making Ken, Sandy, and I designated drivers. You should’ve seen our caravan. There are still two cars that need to be retrieved from the parking lot this morning.”

Jessica appeared at the doorway. “No, Grandpa. What you should’ve seen was the goodnight kiss Alexis got from Grant before he helped load up the cars.”

She looked at her reflection in the stainless steel refrigerator’s door. “Thankfully, there aren’t any dark circles under my eyes.”

“You’ll never have dark circles under your eyes.” Alexis felt her face redden and was thankful for the subject change.

She remembered how electricity had surged like a damned thunderstorm when Grant kissed her in the parking lot. Her front teeth had gone numb with excitement. She hadn’t thought kisses like that existed outside of romance novels, but apparently they did.

When he told her that he wanted to kiss her again, her toes curled in her sandals, and she let him.

Hoping to hide her embarrassment, Alexis looked down at her coffee, snapped a piece of biscotto in half, and dunked it in her coffee.

Jessica grabbed a cup of coffee before joining them at the table.
